This Is Our Story

We are the 51st Virtual Fighter Wing—pilots and controllers bound by realism, discipline, and camaraderie. What began as dogfights in 1999 has become a multi-branch wing that routinely puts 60+ aircraft in the air and flies 20+ missions a month.

This heritage is drawn from veteran testimony, archived rosters, video, and shared memory. It is not a brochure. It is the record of how we got here.

1999 – 2012

Deepest Roots

The Black Knights Begin

In 1999, Dark Knight founded the 667th Fighter Squadron “Black Knights” in the dial-up era. They flew Jane’s F-15, Fighters Anthology, and early Falcon 4.0—pre-BMS, including Allied Force. The name carried weight: it honored the 367th WWII squadron of his grandfather, the Black Knights of Death.

From the beginning, Maverick’s dedicated wingman was Bill Kelleher. They flew side by side until ALS took Bill around 2011. The wing still carries Bill on every sortie—an eternal Black Knight.

Around 2011–2013, Coolcat—limited by available modules but not by ambition—formed the 67th Fighting Cocks and added more Viper strength. Those were pioneering days: open recruitment, raw PvP, and friendships that outlasted any one sim.

2013

The Merger

The Wing Is Born

Maverick from the Black Knights and Coolcat and Squeak from the Fighting Cocks brought the groups together. The 51st Virtual Fighter Wing was formally established on Falcon BMS 4.32.

JoNay joined that year in the Fighting Cocks. Coolcat soon passed command as demands grew; JoNay rose to lead the wing within months. Squeak stepped back for lone-wolf flying but stayed family.

Reinforcements arrived—Cyclops, Viral, Shamrock, Smokey, Fearless, Grifo, and many others whose callsigns still spark stories. The roster grew fast; inactivity taught an early lesson: build with purpose. The battlefield was Falcon Online persistent PvP—months of 24/7 war balanced by focused training.

2014 – 2016

Golden Age

Legends Born in BMS

Marathon weekends defined the era:

• Dawn flights for Singapore-based “Cyclops”
• Midday energy with Maverick and Shamrock (“Shammy”)
• Evening A-G from Lion and ZipGun’s crews—cannon work that emptied the drums before RTB
• Late-night BFM from KidVicious (KV) that ran until sunrise

Allies and rivals who pushed the wing higher included Archer, KidVicious, B3rno, Lion, ZipGun, CenterMass (still flying in 2025), Maeco, Squeak, and Demo of the 1st VFW.

2017 – 2020

Hibernation

A Time of Vigilance

Persistent PvP faded after BMS 4.33. The wing voted to hibernate, stayed connected through the forums, and watched DCS—waiting on Hornet and Viper modules to call everyone home.

Culture never fully went dark. Thong Night lore, Danger Zone shorts, and the 2016 JDAM rejoin stayed in circulation. When the modules landed, the core was ready.

2020 – Present

Rebirth in DCS

Growth and Renewal

April / May 2020: The Viper’s release reignited the wing. Core pilots—JoNay, Cyclops, Maverick, Shamrock, JDAM, Servo—answered. Discord went live. Recruitment followed.

• Fighting Cocks disbanded; JoNay moved to Hornets
• VFA-211 “Fighting Checkmates” livery chosen, honoring the real squadron
• Rage stewarded 667th heritage (Maverick’s BMS heart still in the lineage)

Expansion followed: 75th FS “Tiger Sharks” (A-10C), 1st Regiment Army Air Corps (rotary—named for Servo’s British WWII grandfather), 964th AACS “Phoenix” (controllers). Experiments included VF-143 “Pukin’ Dogs,” VMA-231 “Black Aces,” and the 492nd “Madhatters” (~2023), sparked by pilots with real maintainer backgrounds.

By ~2023 the force streamlined. Today: structured pipelines, Wednesday training, Friday ops, major campaigns, Elephant Walks, and airshows—the living continuation of a line that started in 1999.
