Cadet Selection & IQT

Joining the 667th Black Knights is not just about flying, it’s about becoming a capable, disciplined, and trusted member of a close-knit combat unit. Our Initial Qualification Training (IQT) program is designed to develop core competencies and prepare cadets for full integration into squadron operations.

Upon completion of the Capstone, cadets undergo a final squadron review. Those approved are promoted to Second Lieutenant, awarded a unique callsign, and issued a personalized aircraft skin and tail flash—symbols of their achievement and entry into the Black Knights as a full operational pilot.

Onboarding

After a successful application and interview, selected candidates are inducted as Cadets. This begins a 6–8 week training pipeline focused on foundational skills, tactical execution, and squadron standards. Cadets are expected to be proactive, self-motivated, and committed to continuous learning.

Expectations

  • Schedule and complete all IQTs
  • Participate in a minimum of one event per week
  • Use squadron materials and seek support from Instructor Pilots
  • Fly with required mods and software

IQT 1: Airmanship

The foundation of your training. This flight assesses your ability to operate the jet from cold start to shutdown while executing core tasks like formation flying, tactical turns, basic engagements, and aerial refueling. It’s your first step toward becoming a dependable wingman.

IQT Graded Areas
  • Cold start, DTC setup, and data link alignment
  • Formation takeoffs, rejoin procedures, and TACFORM basics
  • Basic Air-to-Air (BFM) and Air-to-Ground (CCIP/strafe) engagements
  • Air-to-Air Refueling (AAR) with proper comms, join-up, and fill procedures
  • Full mission flow from startup to shutdown, including radio discipline and brevity

IQT 2: Air-to-Air

Fight for control of the skies. You’ll demonstrate your understanding of BVR timelines, WVR tactics, and BFM fundamentals in one-on-one engagements. From missile employment to dogfighting, this IQT proves you can survive and dominate in aerial combat.

IQT Graded Areas
  • BVR: Systems and sensors (FCR, ECM, RWR, HMCS) to engage and defeat threats using AIM-120s and coordinated tactics
  • WVR: Dogfighting using heaters and gun tracking, with proper use of ACM modes, BFM principles, and countermeasures
  • BFM/Guns-Only: Close-in maneuvering emphasizing discipline, control, and guns employment

IQT 3: Air-to-Ground

Strike with precision. This evaluation immerses you in a mission-like scenario where you must identify, target, and destroy threats using a range of A-G munitions and sensors—while navigating a contested battlespace under threat of enemy fire.

IQT Graded Areas
  • Target identification and employment of AGM-88, AGM-65, GBU-12, and CBU-97
  • Sensor setup and employment: HTS, TGP, GMT, DTOS, HMCS marking
  • Operating under threat from SHORAD, MANPADS, and AAA
  • Working with encrypted comms and tactical coordination within the flight

IQT 4: Capstone

The final test. You’ll fly as a wingman in a 4-ship tactical mission, applying everything learned across previous IQTs. This flight evaluates your readiness to operate as part of a combat team—communicating clearly, flying precisely, and executing with confidence.

IQT Graded Areas
  • Cadet operates as a wingman in a live tactical sortie
  • Realistic mission flow from briefing to debriefing
  • Includes air refueling, tactical navigation, and weapons employment
  • Assessed on communication, formation, SA, sensor management, and teamwork
